I have been unwell since about February and need to work on getting healthier and whole again. Don’t worry though – I’ll be around. I may pop in occasionally here or over on Twitter if I find something so eco cool I can’t keep it to myself! I plan to be back in the studio by the end of the summer. Have a great, safe summer and stay green!

My commitment to being eco-conscious in my personal life used to be really strong. From recycling, banning paper napkins in the kitchen, composting, to reusable personal care items – I was committed. That even bleed over into my work life when a few year ago I decided to rebrand my craft business green. Since then though I’ve noticed my personal commitment slipping. We have a ton of paper napkins in the house (albeit Marcel brand), I’ve thrown away a plastic bag or two, and I found myself continuing to commute to work. Alone.

We live in the city proper here in Richmond, VA and my commute to my 9-5 is approximately 15 minutes. Our local transit system (GRTC) has a bus stop literally 70 feet from my house. With money being a bit tight right now and local regular gas prices over the $3.30 mark, and just a general frustration with being incongruent, I decided to re-evaluate my commitment to being green.

A week ago Friday, I canceled my monthly parking contract at my day job. Craig had taken me to work and the plan was for him to pick me up, and I would at some point over the weekend get a GO card for GRTC for use beginning on Monday. Well, you know what they say about the best made plans. Tire trouble that day prevented my husband from coming to pick me up. But no worries – I was already committed to starting to take the bus, I would just have to start earlier than planned. After a quick trip to the ATM and a stop at Starbucks for change, I was headed to the bus stop some 4 blocks away. My theory was that on a Friday evening with traffic the bus would probably be a few minutes behind schedule. Oh contraire mon frere…I almost missed it! Thank goodness for long traffic lights.

Now fast forward to Monday. It’s only Day 2 and Mother Nature is testing my resolve with sideways rain! Luckily the weather let up for my walk to the bus stop and was only a light drizzle from the bus to my house. Day 3? Even more of a test with a very brisk 37 degrees that morning. Even with more cold temps and strong winds later week 1 was good. I do really enjoy taking the bus and I don’t miss driving my car to work daily at all. So eco-friends, what changes, big or small, are you committing to these days?

Subject: July 4th Celebration – Powhatan, VA
Date: February 10, 2011 3:32:04 PM EST

Dear Crafters:

My name is Lisa Lafon and I am with the Huguenot Volunteer Fire Department in Powhatan, VA. We are holding our annual Independence Day Celebration and we are looking for crafters to come be a part of our festivities. We are going to have live music, games and rides for children, and a spectacular fireworks show to end the night. We will also have booths set up for several non-profit organizations. We would love to have some local crafters come out to sell their products as well…The celebration is on Saturday, July 2, 2011 from 5 PM – 10 PM. This is our third year doing this and we have had great success. We have visitors come from all over the Metro Richmond area and our attendance has reached approximately 3,000 visitors. We hope to have even more people in attendance this year!… We would love to see you there! …

Thank you for your consideration!

I, like most of you, love clearing out and cleaning up during the cold winter months. Maybe its the newness of a new year, or the long evenings spent inside, but every January I go through a serious purging of stuff.

This January is no different, and for the 5th year in a row I will be hosting the Crafters Anonymous Craft Swap!

Crafters Anonymous Craft Swap presented by the FOUND Collective

The Crafters Anonymous Craft Swap is an opportunity for artists, crafters, creators and makers of all types to get together in a fun, social environment and trade unwanted craft supplies. You bring in stuff you no longer use and trade up for stuff you want. We provide work tables at the event so you are welcome to sit, chat and make all day. The event is my way of helping the creative community in RVA to recycle and to help give back to area non-profits who use art/craft in their mission. Financial proceeds from the event go to benefit Art 180 and all leftover supplies are free to local non-profits after the event. Please check out the event website for details.

So, while you are cleaning and organizing your space this month, why not start a bag for the swap?
